Like this erratic I didn’t arise from the native bedrock, but I have been settled in the Adirondacks for over 15 years. My husband helped me start my garden the year we built our house, by bringing me a dump truck load of horse manure. Last year I turned my home garden into a market garden to help the Paul Smith’s College Farmers’ Market get established, and co-managed the market during its first year. I’m in my late forties, college educated, with two kids in addition to aforementioned spouse. I have an interest in science and skepticism, which will become apparent from my blog entries, and am generally fascinated by getting my mind around new ways of thinking.
Farming in the Adirondacks had its heyday a century-and-a-half ago, and will never compete with the monocrop expanses of the Midwest. But, as eating fresh and eating local grows in importance, a network is developing of small farmers, market growers, and home gardeners providing food for residents and visitors to the area. I want to help this network along by learning about new techniques and policies that can affect us, by encouraging everyone to explore the wide world of fresh foods, and by getting more people to grow more gardens!
